As the second season of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation has concluded, there’s a lot that needs digesting. A lot of aspects and avenues were explored, so let us look at what actually went on.
Isekai, is a genre of Anime where the main character is in essence transported to another world.
Although this isekai series has received mixed reviews from its critics and audience due to the presence of a few harem events.
Still, it faired really well and actually did build up on the premises it set in the first season, not to mention it was entertaining as hell throughout.
Mushoku Tensei has a unique plot that delivers, but had the potential to be even better
The season starts with Rudeus, still out of sorts, after Eris decided to abandon him.
Nevertheless, Rudeus decides to embark on his journey, to find the whereabouts of his mother Zenith. He starts earning money through guild missions and puts a lot of effort into spreading his name through cities to build his reputation.
He does this in the hope that it might help his mother recognize him someday.
We are then graced with the presence of the Man God who advises Rudeus to stop searching for his mother for the time being, and accept the invitation he received from the Magic University of Ranoa.
The enigmatic god in the void world tells Rudy to look into the teleportation incident at the university. Additionally, he hints at a potential solution for Rudy’s struggle with erectile dysfunction.
It is at this university that Rudeus also meets Sylphie, his childhood friend.
Now, we see a completely different set of events play out.
The love story between Rudy and Sylphie takes center stage for a while. The two of them eventually go on to marry each other.
Mushoku Tensei also explores the teleportation incident. At the university, Rudeus encounters a familiar face already investigating the matter: the masked girl who was with Orsted – the Dragon God who killed Rudeus. (He did bring Rudeus back to life as well).
Yes, eventually Rudeus with help from others, does save and bring Zenith back. In doing so, Rudeus meets the only mage he respects, Roxy
So, we do see both confessing their feelings to each other after spending a night together and Rudeus agreeing to marry her as well. All this while Sylphie was pregnant with his child.
So, you see, the events that occur are really interesting and thought provoking, but with how and when everything unfolded, fans may have found themselves thinking more along the lines of “What will happen if Eris comes back? Is Rudy going to have more flings?” rather than the actual plot of the anime, which was saving Zenith and finding out about the teleportation incident.
There are a lot of good things that went on as well.
The season explored Rudy’s character as a whole. Although, we know him as a smart-nut, he is capable of being hard headed at times. I understand it is easy to criticize sitting on this side of the screen, but even with the grey hair, how come Rudeus never even got a clue of Fitz being Sylphiette, with all the intelligence in his brain? Not even a little?
Another example is from the first season, when Rudy concludes that Eris has abandoned him for good. We’ve seen that Eris struggles to express her true feelings, but Rudy never considers the possibility of a misunderstanding.
These events somehow justify Rudeus of his age and establish his imperfections as a human as well.
A major positive of this season was the character development. Aisha and Norn’s characters were portrayed beautifully with the needed attention. Elinalise and Cliff got there share of the pie as well. We also got to know more about Nanahosi – the masked girl with the Dragon God as we found out that she, unlike Rudeus- who was born in the magical world, was teleported from Japan.
Also, the animation was consistent and flawless. Everything from the character to scenic designs have been well executed.
What to expect moving forward & Latest Updates
There are plenty of things that are yet to be uncovered like whether Eris will return or not? What’s the deal with Gods and what about Orsted’s (The Dragon God) animosity towards the Human God? Who are the other Gods? I mean we do hear names but will we get to see them?
We must also look forward towards the development of Kishirika Kishirisu, the demon empress.
We are yet to see how Princess Ariel’s quest for the Ashura Kingdom’s throne concludes and if Fitz AKA Sylphiette will have any role in that. What will happen with Ruijerd and the Superd Tribe, will that part of the story be explored further?
So, there is a lot to look forward to.
Overall, this season of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation was interesting and really entertaining but had some timing issues. The transition between events felt a bit rough and forced.
A major update about this anime series, adapted from a light novel of the same name, is that it will be getting a third season. This news is a relief, as many good anime often remain unfinished.
See you soon folks!
