The iconic cyberpunk franchise is gearing up for a bold new chapter. Bandai Namco has officially debuted a first-look teaser trailer and visual for a brand-new TV anime titled simply The Ghost in the Shell. Scheduled to premiere in July 2026, this latest iteration marks a significant shift in production as it moves to the acclaimed studio Science SARU
A Powerhouse Creative Team
This new series brings together a highly distinguished staff known for pushing the boundaries of modern animation. Science SARU, the studio behind hits like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Inu-oh, and Dan Da Dan, will lead the animation production.
The series features a stellar creative lineup:
- Director: Moko-chan (also known as Touma Kimura), who previously served as the assistant director for Dan Da Dan.
- Series Composition & Script: EnJoe Toh, the SF novelist recognized for his work on Godzilla Singular Point and Space Dandy.
- Character Design & Executive Animation Director: Shuhei Handa (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), whose designs for this series are noted for hewing closer to Shirow Masamune’s original manga than previous anime adaptations.
The Sound of Section 9
The musical direction for the series is equally ambitious. Taisei Iwasaki (Blood Blockade Battlefront) serves as the music director and lead composer. Iwasaki, who described his musical concept for the project as “Sound Public Security Section 9,” is joined by co-composers Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka.
The composers have expressed deep personal ties to the franchise; Konishi noted the profound influence the series has had on his own ideology, while Kanesaka shared that he prepared for the project by immersing himself in both the English and Japanese versions of the original manga.
Returning to the Source
While Ghost in the Shell has seen many legendary iterations—including Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film and the Stand Alone Complex series by Production I.G—this new project aims to honor the “origin and source” of the 1989 manga. The story once again follows Motoko Kusanagi, the full-body cyborg leader of the “Shell Squad” (Public Security Section 9), as she battles high-level cybercrime in a future where the line between humanity and technology is permanently blurred
Release Details
The series is set to air in Japan starting in July 2026. It will hold a Tuesday 11:00 PM time slot on the Kaanival 11 block, available on the Kansai Television and Fuji Television networks. While the Japanese launch is confirmed, a US release date has not yet been set.
Fans can currently catch a glimpse of the Major, Batou, and Aramaki in the newly released teaser, which showcases Science SARU’s distinct fluid animation style applied to this gritty sci-fi world.
